Favorite Ways to Stay Active in the Greater Chicago Area

Joshua Paul Kranig shares some of his favorite ways to stay active while living in the greater Chicago area. As a resident of the Chicago region, staying active has become an important part of my routine. The city and its surrounding suburbs offer countless opportunities to move, explore, and enjoy the outdoors year-round. One of my favorite activities is walking or biking along the Lakefront Trail. Whether it’s a crisp morning in spring or a beautiful summer evening, the views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline never get old. On weekends, I often head to the 606 (Bloomingdale Trail) for a change of scenery and to enjoy the elevated views of different neighborhoods. During the warmer months, Chicago’s many parks provide great spaces for running, outdoor yoga, or simply playing pickup sports. In the winter, indoor options like the Chicago Park District facilities or local gyms help maintain consistency even when the weather turns cold. Beyond exercise, staying active in Chicago is also about community. Joining local walking groups, participating in neighborhood events, or exploring new areas on foot helps build connections and a sense of belonging. For anyone living in the greater Chicago area, I recommend starting small — whether it’s a daily walk in your neighborhood or trying a new trail on the weekends. Consistency and enjoying the process matter more than intensity. What are your favorite ways to stay active around Chicago?
