Favorite Ways to Stay Active in the Greater Chicago Area
My name is Joshua Paul Kranig, and I want to talk about something that doesn't get discussed enough — what it really means to stay active. Not just physically, but mentally, socially, and purposefully. Because in my experience, true activity isn't just about breaking a sweat. It's about showing up fully for your life. Living in the greater Chicago area gives you every opportunity to do exactly that. Here are the ways I personally stay active — and why each one matters more than you might think. The Gym — Building the Foundation For me, the gym is non-negotiable. It's where the day starts right. There's something about walking in, putting in the work, and walking out knowing you did something hard before most people even opened their eyes. That feeling carries into everything else. The gym isn't just about physical strength — though that matters. It's about discipline. It's about showing up on the days you don't feel like it, pushing through when it would be easier to quit, and proving to yourself over and over again that you can do hard things. Chicago has incredible gyms and fitness communities throughout the city and suburbs. Whether you're into lifting, cardio, boxing, or group classes, there's something here for everyone. But beyond the equipment and the programs, what I value most about the gym is the mindset it builds. A person who trains consistently is a person who understands that growth requires effort, patience, and showing up even when results are slow. That lesson extends far beyond fitness. It's a life lesson. And it's one I come back to every single day. Riding Motorcycle — Freedom on Two Wheels If you've never experienced the feeling of riding a motorcycle through the greater Chicago area on a clear day, I'm not sure I can fully put it into words. But I'll try. There's a freedom to it that nothing else quite matches. The open road, the wind, the way the world moves differently when you're on two wheels instead of four. Riding demands your full attention — you can't be distracted, you can't be half present. You have to be completely there, completely focused, completely alive in the moment. For me, riding is both physical and mental. It's active in the truest sense — your body is engaged, your mind is sharp, and whatever was weighing on you before you got on the bike has a way of fading into the background. Chicago and the surrounding area offer some incredible routes, from lakefront roads to open highways heading out into the Midwest landscape. Every ride is different. Every ride clears my head and reminds me why I love this part of the country. Riding has also taught me something important about risk and responsibility — that confidence comes not from recklessness, but from preparation, awareness, and respect for the road. That's a lesson that applies to everything. Volunteering — The Most Important Activity of All Here's something I believe deeply: the most active thing you can do for your community — and for yourself — is show up and serve others. Volunteering has been one of the most meaningful parts of my life in the Chicago area. When you give your time to something bigger than yourself, something shifts. The problems that felt heavy start to feel smaller. The gratitude that comes from helping someone who genuinely needs it is unlike anything you can buy or earn. Chicago has an incredible network of organizations, community programs, food banks, neighborhood initiatives, and nonprofits doing vital work every single day. The need is real, and so is the opportunity to make a difference. I've found that volunteering keeps me grounded in a way nothing else does. It connects me to the community in a direct, tangible way. It reminds me that Kranig Forward isn't just about my own growth — it's about contributing positively to the people around me. Moving forward means bringing others along, not just yourself. If you're looking for a way to stay active that fills you up rather than drains you, I can't recommend volunteering highly enough. Find a cause you care about in your neighborhood and show up. You'll be amazed at what comes back to you. Staying Active Is a Mindset Whether I'm in the gym, on my motorcycle, or volunteering in the community, the common thread is this — I'm choosing to engage with life rather than watch it pass by. Chicago rewards that choice. This city is built for people who show up, who stay active, who invest in themselves and the people around them. That energy is contagious here, and I'm grateful every day to be part of it. Stay active, Chicago. In every way that matters.
